white chrysanthemum
Before the white chrysanthemum
the scissors hesitate
a moment.
— Yosa Buson (1716–1783)
This is the traditional 16 point kiku (chrysanthemum) pattern. I have changed it a bit by layering the last two rows at the equator.
Thread wrap in dark slate gray; S16 division in perle #8. Embroidery in very light blue, very light lilac, and three shades of slightly tinted off-white (no thread is actually pure white). The haiku by Buson is in the bell box along with brass rings that make a quiet traditional rattle. Circumference: 11 inches / 28 cm; diameter: 3.5 inches / 8.9 cm. Completed 2 September 2012 (no. 148).
Sold to benefit Kiva.org.
